Talk about a rough day! It wasn’t so much rough as it was traumatic. First, I go check my mailbox in the lobby of the dorm and I find this slip telling me that I had an oversized package, too large for my box. The work-study student behind the front desk handed it to me. It was from Clarence.
He is so childish! He had the audacity to send me belongings that I’d left behind at his place, including my pink cotton underwear set, an old pair of my reading glasses, a gray wool sweater, and a pair of socks. Yes, I said socks. What type of trifling man would send such things cross-country? I’ll tell you what type. The same type that would try to turn his infidelities around on me. Infidelity is a harsh word, especially since I was dating Trevor, sleeping with Trevor, and had indulged in that freaky behavior with Drayton.
But, Clarence still had a lot of damn nerve. I was ready to move forward. In fact, that same day I was planning to tell Trevor I’d move in with him the next semester. We were spending a lot of time together. We had engaged in sex quite a bit and that had gotten better as we became more comfortable with one another. He still couldn’t touch my experience with Drayton though. I can’t rightly say I was in love with Trevor at that point, but the feelings were strong. I guess that’s why what happened later that afternoon hurt so much. It cut right down to the bone.
I caught a cab over to Trevor’s town house to tell him the news of my decision to live with him. I was all the more excited after getting Clarence’s bullshit package. My elation didn’t last long. It faded like a certain pop star’s skin. I rang the doorbell, expecting my man to open it.
Instead, FeFe did. “Come on in,” she said, like she was the woman of the house.
I knocked her ass out of my way. I stepped into the foyer, yelled out, “Trevor! Trevor!” I kept shouting as I went from the living room, to the kitchen, and then up the steps.
“He’s not here.” FeFe looked as snug as a bug in a rug. “He went to the store.”
“His car’s outside. Stop lying,” I hissed back at her.
“Trevor took my car.” She grinned. “He just loves the way I ride, I mean the way my car rides.”
“Well, bitch, I ride him better.”
She slammed the front door and folded her arms, trying to take a threatening stance. “You’re just some fly-by-night pussy for Trevor. He’ll come back to me. He knows where the good pussy lives.”
“Is that right?” I asked.
“This little thing between you and Trevor has gone far enough. He and I have been fucking since our sophomore year of undergrad. It’s time he made a commitment to me.”
I fell out laughing. “Well, I think you better notify him of all that because he told me he plans to settle down with me.
